James is the Head of Clerking at Queen Square Chambers, with direct responsibility for all Chancery, Clinical Negligence, Commercial, Employment, Family and Personal Injury teams.
He joined the clerking team at chambers in 2000 as a junior Criminal Clerk having followed the traditional route of a degree in Building Surveying.
In 2002 James attempted to break from his life of crime and switched disciplines to become the Civil & Family clerk.
In 2005 he became the Head of Clerking and was rewarded with the daily responsibility for the smooth running of the clerks room and for chambers more widely in the absence of the CEO.
As a result of James’ considerable experience he is heavily involved in the marketing and strategic planning for chambers, working closely with the CEO on tendering projects and financial forecasting.
He is extremely knowledgeable about his teams and their practice areas and is always available either by telephone or email to provide guidance and fee estimates.

Beyond chambers James, who was raised in Bristol & Bath, is attempting to acclimatise to life over the bridge in Chepstow. Outside of work he is usually found either trying to keep up with his young son, travelling around supporting Bath Rugby or working on a DIY project he wishes he never started.James Dowse manages a ‘personable, knowledgeable and helpful’ clerking team which ‘always responds quickly and is flexible in its approach’.
